ENTICEMENTS – Book Cover Blurbs

It’s no easy task to write an enticing book cover blurb. I’ve always believed that my first responsibility as a writer is to attempt to fulfill the expectations of readers each time I write a romantic suspense novel. It follows then that an enticing cover blurb is my solemn promise to readers that they will, in fact, discover within my books the stories I’ve promised to give to them. So, yes, I am writing an enticement, but it must be a truthful enticement.

Boiled down to its true purposes, a book cover blurb accomplishes two things. It provides the reader with a verbal snapshot of the essence of an entire story, and it entices that reader to sample the opening pages of the novel prior to making the purchase.

What really prompted me to blog on this topic? I’ve heard from a broad cross-section of readers in recent months – readers from my past and new readers from the present. To be honest, I’m amazed by the sheer volume of the correspondence, and I’m dazzled and grateful for their praise and the warmth of their welcome. Stay with me here, though, because there’s a downside …

One email in particular from a first-time reader illustrated an underlying note of frustration expressed by several readers, and that’s what I want to share with you. The reader wrote, in part, “ … and thank you for your accurate summaries of your books. My pet peeve is being misled by a writer, and it happens over and over again with e-books. When a writer promises a certain kind of book, I expect that promise to be kept … let me know when your next book will come out … ”

Her words are now etched permanently into my brain. It is my firm belief that all writers should heed her words. Simply put: if we disappoint our readers, why should they buy our books? Once burned, twice shy??? We count on those loyal readers, because they appreciate our hard work and they help us to build and sustain our writing careers.

Now for the fun part … the real key to writing book cover blurbs is to begin with the broad landscape of the story, and to condense, condense, and then condense some more. Ask yourself the following questions: What are the most important points of the story? Why would those points interest a reader? Is there a specific genre language base I can employ to entice my potential readership demographic without the use of clichés? Once you’ve dealt with the preceding, write it all down. You may end up with one or more pages of text. Not to worry. Condense, and keep condensing until you’ve synthesized your book into one or two essence-capturing paragraphs.

Trust me when I tell you that my learning curve has been steep. Like many writers, my roots are in the traditional publishing world. It is challenging to capture the essence of a novel in one or two paragraphs! Prior versions of my books contained cover blurbs written by some of the legends in the publishing world. At the time, I didn’t understand the skill they brought to the table. I do now!

The following are the book cover blurbs for FALLEN ANGEL, DESERT ROSE, and MIDNIGHT STORM, Special Author’s Cut Updated Edition of novels originally published as Bantam Loveswepts. I must share the credit for these book cover blurbs, because they resulted from a successful collaborative effort with my new publisher, Blue Jay Media Group.

FALLEN ANGEL

Geneva Talmadge makes it a habit to thwart the advances of any man who approaches her. Why? The simple answer: she was once an expert bomb-maker for the Central Intelligence Agency. The not so simple answer: if she gives her heart to a man, she fears that he will reject her if he learns the truth about her past in the shadowy world of covert ops.

When attorney Thomas Coltrane returns to his Northern Nevada roots in search of a simpler lifestyle, he refuses to be held at bay by the beautiful, hearing impaired, and all too skittish Geneva. He is a man accustomed to success – in the courtroom and in the bedroom. So begins Thomas Coltrane’s relentlessly sensual pursuit of the alluring Geneva Talmadge. In a love story that melds powerful emotion and sizzling passions, two world-weary souls risk their hearts in the ultimate mating dance.

(Note: the preceding started out as 5 pages of text – 3 full rounds of editing resulted in the book cover blurb you’ve just read for Fallen Angel.)

DESERT ROSE

The secret police of a renegade Middle East nation holds two politically sensitive prisoners separate from the others … Marine Corps aviator David Winslow and humanitarian relief worker Emma Hamilton are the sole inmates of a special cellblock. They bond emotionally and sensually, despite being housed in separate cells, as they endure interrogations, torture, and the constant threat of death. When fate unexpectedly liberates them from the prison compound, their dash for freedom includes the seductive culmination of weeks of emotional foreplay. But once they flee the country, David doubts Emma’s certainty that she is in love with him. He fears that she feels only gratitude.

(Note: the Desert Rose book cover blurb took so many rounds of back and forth editing, I stopped counting!)

MIDNIGHT STORM

Even though Jessica Cleary loved Marine Corps pilot Devlin MacKenzie, she cancelled their wedding. That was ten years ago. She still loves the bold jet jockey, but she remains haunted by the loss of her aviator father during an earlier war. After being shot down and rescued in the Middle East, Devlin turns up without warning at Jessica’s bed and breakfast inn under the guise of needing a place to recover from his injuries and avoid the media, thus setting in motion a deeply sensual rekindling of a love never completely abandoned. And while a tornado threatens to destroy the lakefront bed and breakfast inn to which Jessica has devoted herself, Devlin MacKenzie threatens to shatter her emotional resistance to him with a scorching seduction and the promise of a shared future.

(Note: the Midnight Storm cover blurb literally wrote itself – a rare and priceless event! I hope there are a few more of those in my future.)

If you’re looking for additional examples of enticing book cover blurbs, check out authors such as Cynthia Wright, Patricia Rice, Rebecca Sinclair, Peggy Webb, Judith Arnold, E.B. Walters, Mary Tate Engels, Angela K. Roe, and Eve Gaddy. These writers have it goin’ on!

Hope you’re all doing well. As always, I welcome your feedback. You’ll find me on Facebook, Google +, and Twitter, so stop in and say hi. For my part, I shall continue to entice with accuracy, honesty, and brevity! Hugs all around . . . Laura

I LOVE My Romantic Suspense Book Covers!

Writers react in a variety of ways to book cover art when they receive it from their publishers – from dismay to delight, chagrin to relief, and a thousand other responses in between these two positive and negative examples. Why? The obvious answer is that writers often feel that they are at the mercy of the publisher’s art department, which may or may not grasp the book’s concept despite their zeal to sell the book in both traditional and digital markets.

Now consider the less obvious answer – most writers consciously and subconsciously accumulate an array of mental images that reflect the content of their books when they’re writing them.

Book cover art conveys countless messages to a reader, including a novel’s genre, the era of the story, levels of tension and conflict, the time of the year, the story’s primary location, etc. In the digital age, the challenge of effective book cover art is heightened even more. The brick and mortar bookstore reader is dealing with something larger and more substantive than our digital readers, i.e. they can examine a bound book. The latter group of readers, however, sees a thumbnail image as they browse on-line offerings at the Amazon Kindle Store, the B&N Nook Store, the Apple iStore, Kobo, etc. Those miniaturized cover art images bear the burden of telegraphing a great deal of information at a glance to our readers.

Thriller author Barry Eisler shared on a recent blog a frustrating experience with the French reprint publisher of one of his legendary John Rain books – the upshot of the episode was that the author hit a brick wall when he attempted to persuade said publisher that his art department had totally missed the mark with the cover art for a foreign edition that held the potential to yield high sales numbers for both the French reprint publisher and the author.

War stories from the trenches, you’re thinking. Well, I thought that, too, at first. But then I began to contemplate, far more seriously than I had in several years, the manner in which I wanted my cover art to speak to my readers – both old and new – as I began the process of releasing Author’s Special Cut updated editions of novels from my Bantam Loveswept and Harlequin / Silhouette Desire backlists.

This writer wanted her cover art to convey the essential essence of each book being offered for consideration by a reader, but absent the traditional “couple in a clutch” cover image without causing confusion among my readers. Since I’m a romantic suspense writer, I consciously visualized images that conveyed a deeply sensual relationship and the suspense inherent in the unfolding story, the environment, and the sensual romantic relationship between the hero and the heroine. I then added location and the time of the year to my visualizing process. After that, I ransacked my brain for the right words and phrases to convey what I was seeing in my mind.

The next step for me was to consult with Blue Jay Media Group, the publisher that is handling the re-release of all of the updated editions of my backlist, and to explain in broad verbal strokes what I visualized for each book cover. Now here’s where the magic really began to happen for me: Blue Jay’s cover art specialist transformed my verbal descriptions into the most AMAZING cover art for Intimate Strangers, Fallen Angel, Desert Rose, and Midnight Storm, the first four books just released this summer. My book cover art speaks to the sensual relationships, the suspense-filled situations, and the environmental factors that come into play in each book – in a nutshell, romantic suspense book covers!

Do I consider myself blessed to be working with such talented people? You bet! I also have every confidence that this blessed feeling will continue as Blue Jay designs additional book covers unique to the visual signature I’ve requested.

Hope you’re all doing well. Let me hear from you.
And if you have time, please consider leaving reviews of my novels at the Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, KOBO, Smashwords, and Apple iStores. Reader reviews are super important!

Hugs all around … Laura

Updating My Classic Loveswept Novels

Many romance readers already know that Random House is re-issuing Bantam’s LOVESWEPT imprint. Loveswept not only encouraged its writers to push romance boundaries, it provided a creative home to numerous romance writers during its long run in the publishing world. I was one of those Loveswept writers.

When the Loveswept imprint was shut down, the writers were offered the opportunity to reclaim our novels through the reversion of rights clauses in our book contracts. That window of opportunity was extremely narrow, and reclaiming the rights to my 17 Loveswepts proved to be a decision far wiser than I could have ever anticipated.

Shift forward in time 10 plus years to Random House’s re-launch of classic Loveswepts penned by writers such as Janet Evanovich, Sandra Brown, and Tom and Sharon Curtis – and countless others! Now, imagine my amazement when I learned about the Loveswept re-release plans in an issue of Romantic Times Book Reviews Magazine early this summer.

Why was I amazed? I was hip-deep in updating editions of several of my own Loveswepts and Harlequin / Silhouette Desires, as well as a few surprises, for digital release. Updating my Loveswepts and Desires for today’s readers poses unique challenges, not the least of which is meeting the expectations of a whole new generation of readers.

My Loveswept editor, back in the day, urged me to curb my creative impulse to write extremely sensual books. She was a fabulous editor, and I took her guidance. This time, though, I’m adding my own instincts as a reader, a writer, and as a freelance editorial consultant to the mix. As a result, my updated novels contain the classic Loveswept love stories originally published under my name, but now with the heightened sensuality and edginess that today’s readers expect when they purchase a HOT (my favorite rating from Romantic Times Book Reviews) romance novel.

After months and months of updating and editing and re-crafting, I am privileged to say, “Welcome, Readers . . . welcome loyal readers from the past and welcome new readers . . . a heartfelt thank you for inviting me back into your lives via your Kindles and Nooks and other e-reading devices . . . I’ve missed you, and I’m delighted to be able to entertain you with my books once again.”

I’ll be sharing more than 20 novels with you during the coming year. The first four romantic suspense novels available this week at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, the Apple iStore (and at other on-line locations!) as e-books are:

INTIMATE STRANGERS (the FREE prequel to Fallen Angel)
FALLEN ANGEL (Loveswept # 799)
DESERT ROSE (Loveswept # 555)
MIDNIGHT STORM (Loveswept #576)

Enjoy! And let me hear from you, because I really want your feedback. Hugs all around, Laura
